actually, if you read the author's note in the beginning the script is indeed a tragedy and should be played thusly, "there is only one sure way to play this material- truthfully. Bat Boy is not a satire or parody of musicals, though it presents skewed versions of familiar themes"

I was a part of making bat boy in my high school. We recently just finished our last show. We got a standing ovation, it was awesome. We made the show more serious than this though.
