Actually this is a very accurate portrayal of a highly effective medicine that was around BEFORE the dark ages. Many people find that cupping and gua sha are very comfortable and pleasant. The results are definitely worth the "hickeys".

Scraping a dull edge over the back ruptures small blood vessels; you can think of it as intentional bruising. Cupping creates a similar effect, except through suction rather than pressure (that's where the circular bruises came from). They're two different methods of traditional Chinese medicine.
