One of the most beautiful, most poignant gay songs ever written. Recorded in 1974, his album "Caravan Tonight" was the first openly gay album to be released on a major label. "Out" has long been one of my favourite songs, and is one that should be heard by every gay man. With only a couple of pictures of Steven, I managed to put this together on Windows Movie Maker. It took me about 2 hours, but I'm pleased with the result. If nothing else, I hope that posting this on youtube will help bring about the recognition that Steven so truly deserves. Sadly he is no longer with us. He died of AIDS in 1991 but leaves behind this wonderful legacy.Mama, dear Mama, I've something important to sayYes I know you didn't plan on me turning out this wayWell you didn't fail me Mama and I don't love you any less'Cause for me it's just a matter of what suits me bestWell, you know it's hard for you to take, and it's nothing you would bragWhen your first born turns out to be a (fag)Papa, oh Papa, did I spoil your dreamsI know you wanted to see me marching in the MarinesWell that won't prove my manhood, as it didn't prove yours'Cause I went and talked to that landlord while you stood behind the doorWell, I hear you calling me crazy, but I think it's out of fear'Cause you're not so sure that you aren't (queer)Brother, little brother, tell me what you gonna doIf everything that has happened to me someday happens to youWill you try to grin and bear it?, Will you hate yourself inside?Or will you walk with me in the sunshine 'cause you've really nothing to hide'Cause there are all kinds of people who happen to feel this wayAnd there's really nothing wrong with being (gay) the way that you want to, yeahNothing wrong with being, you know it's OKNothing wrong with being gay

He's wonderful. So many of his songs reflect much of what I went through coming out. After a great deal of searching, have gotten "Caravan Tonight" safely into Itunes. If anyone needs it on disc let me know.

Please tell me anything you care to share about Steven. I came out in 1975, was given his album by a friend I'll always remember, and he was my coming out "guide." Why, if he had a five album contract, did he not fullfill this? I have the treasured album and will copy it for anyone who asks. This needs to live on, and its not available.

Sadly Steven passed on from AIDS at the age of 40. he always said he would not live beyond 40. Many of his beloved friends were with him at the end of his life. He ended his days in San Fransisco and his ashes were scattered to the wind. He was a very special person.

I had a vinyl of his songs a long time ago. Nobody knew who he was when I lived in Brooklyn (1981-1988), but I loved the songs on the album. They helped me when I was struggling with my sexuality and showed me that we mattered as much as the straights and our love was just as genuine. I remember thinking that the picture on the album made him look like Jesus Christ; it was odd that I, an atheist, would "follow Jesus". But his songs were beautiful and significant. Whatever happened to him?

Thanks to both posters for their touching tributes. Regrettably I do not own a copy of the album, this track is the only one I have, and was sent to me by a friend a couple of years ago.I'm so glad that this video has found a way of allowing this song to touch peoples souls, maybe for the first time, or re-kindling old associations.

When his album was released, I saw Steve, live in Buffalo, NY at the Gay Community Center. I owned the album, but gave it to a man I loved. He died, but I have no idea what happened to the album. I'd be very willing to pay someone for a tape or cd of the album. I remember being so inspired by his lyrics when I was young. His voice was beautiful and he was so very handsome! if you are willing to make a copy of the album for me, I'd pay.
