I agreed with fldrh said .Shina might influenced by Bjork, but she definitely ahead of Fiona Apple long time ago. listen to shina's songs is like fall into antoher world,i see a woman, a girl, a queen ,pain in real life , day dreams .joy ....etc . complex perspective of shina but somehow makes her much more real to me, if shina is a book ,i think she is a better story teller ,i enjoy to read her more the Fiona Apple. just my opinion .

Shiina is my favourite singer. I think she might be a genius. And for what it's worth I remember reading years ago that Fiona Apple was one of her favourite singers. People used to get all offended when anyone said Shiina reminded them of Alanis, and they'd scream "Alanis sucks" and how Shiina was a fan of Fiona who was way better than Alanis, and on and on it went... In her early work there's a definite similarity so I see no reason to doubt it. When I meet her I'll try to remember to ask.

Thanks for explaining. Besides the one word ringo/apple, if there are any similarities in the music itself, it's certainly not very obvious. Fiona and Shiina sound very different and I wouldn't think to compare them. And if there is some subtle influence somewhere ... it's a very weak thing to criticize someone for. Everyone is influenced by what came before them - that's normal and healthy and it makes for great music.

She had many many anti-Shiina Ringo fans once. Fiona Apple, Alanis Morissette, and so on... they were used in order that they might insult her. They criticized for her to have imitated Fiona's name, or to be mimicking how to sing Aranis. But, actually, her image that she planned was the complete opposite of Fiona when she used "Ringo" for the first time. And she changes how to sing for every song.

This comment rating is a little creepy. Why does a comment get a -6, just for saying that this singer is similar to another one? Isn't that more interesting and useful than saying "I love you shiina!" ? Why does my comment that Fiona is also one of the most talented get knocked? Am I insulting Shiina if I say she's not the only very talented person in the world? it doesn't always come down to being better or worse, guys - there are many ways to be great. go ahead ... thumbs down me now.

Fiona is definitely an extremely talented songwriter but I think a lot of her musical magic/genius lies in the fact that she works with a fantastic producer (Jon Brion) while Shiina's lyrical and musical talented are all pretty much self made and fostered by the individuals she chooses to work with but it's all Shiina behind the scenes. I love Fiona but Shiina's a force to be reckoned with. |
