what are you talking about? You want the evaporator glowing red as it makes a stronger bond and lets it flow. he is using high content silver brazing rods, not using solder as im sure is what your used to using

Would you use steel or alu for an evap? Im sure steel would be the last thing you would wanna be using.

Well, it could have just as easily been steel or aluminum. There's no way to tell by watching the video.As far as the tip goes, what you have there could be fine, but that flame seems large for such a small component. I'm sure you're well past brazing temp and to the point that the joint is soft and weak as a result of the excessive heat.

I realize it's thin metal you're working with there, but if it's glowing, turn the heat down a bit.Try to use something other than that handheld flamethrower next time :) A small rosebud would knock that out in no time.
