Sam Harris starts off by great introduction for the basis of attains and aims of science, interestingly, inverted the subject to philosohy where religion is held. Such such a example to reflect intellectual honesty relationship to religion is moronic?Intellectual honesty is in business if religion wants to explore a realm of spirituality.

it's amazing, and to a greater extent depressing, when people regardless of their religion, race, etc fall pray to such deliprate misconception!Contrary to "accepted version of history" it has always been the costume of which criminals cover their crimes, religion.

Who is to decide what to take literally and what to interpret metaphorically? Many people would take exception to those that saw the "blood of Christ" as a mere metaphor. The Catholic Church DOES teach that it is the actual body/blood of Christ(due to transubstantiation). It may not change physically, but the "SUBSTANCE" changes. It's complicated..mostly b/c it's bullshit.

4th commandment/sabbath trashing is about the most obvious religious con job/deception on EARTH. Just compare how 99% of the church use ACTS 20:7 and never teach about ACTS 13:42-44, 16:13, 17:2 and 18:4. The usual text used is Col 2:16,17 and by many who don't have a clue what they are talking about. If PAUL trashed the sabbath, why didn't he warn all of those gentiles in ACTS to stop hanging around the Jews and come worship with him on the SUNday/Lord's day?? SATAN has the church sinning

Another case where people are divided in their own religion; I recall seeing videos and reading testimonials of people who actually believed they were eating the flesh and drinking the blood of Christ. I am not sure if this is the norm, as I am not Catholic, but I did see it in a documentary.

Som Harris is right about how important intellectual honesty is, but I agree with you about the fact that the cracker is the SYMBOL of Christ. To share bread and wine in memory of Christ. There is a great book about myths and faith that Harris should read : "Marriage of East and West" by Bede Griffiths.

I think he is missing the point. Catholics don't believe that the cracker is actually the body of Christ. They believe it is symbolically the body of Christ. Catholicism is chock full of symbolism, and this is just one of them.

Fair enough. I was under the assumption that you were drawing a parallel between faith in general and prayer.Still, unfortunately for those that would claim otherwise, the two do go hand in hand. Belief in the deistic sense is exempt from this, but believing in any god of any dogmatic monotheistic faith by default makes one a believer in prayer. Claims about the power of prayer are all over scripture.

Friend, I agree with you. I am playing devils advocate... I think those that talk to god think there is a real conversation going on... In those cases, it is crazy.
Trumpetz81 (December 31, 1969 at 6:59 pm)
And if you speak to something everyday for your entire life, is it not crazy to continue believing something is actually listening to you when you haven't gotten a single response after 10, 20, 40, or 60 years of prayer? I mean really, yes faith is crazy. Believing anything without sufficient evidence is downright foolish. |
