Fair point inwonder, however Amma is an example of meditation in action. Meditation is the tool which will allow people to see the problem and solution within themselves. Amma plays softball or mega-hardball depending on where you are. For some people just seeing Amma in action allows them to see what is possible. We all start the spiritual path in utter misery, allowing yourself to be 'adopted' by a Guru is not pathetic, it is the first and smartest move anyone of us will ever make!
