Well IMO, the DOD should have granted the go-ahead for the F-14E "Super Tomcat" which would have incorporated fly-by-wire systems to replace the old pain in the ass hydraulics and upgraded computing systems. Maintenance would have been quite a bit less, the problematic hydraulics system would been gone and the Tomcat would been as menacing as ever. But they didnt want to spend 55mill on each new airframe and components for it. But they will spend 130mill per Raptor.

LoL, not maneuverable? You've obviously never seen one fly. With the exception of the Raptor, the Tomcat is the most maneuverable aircraft for its size scale. They did, can and still could hang with the F/A-18 Hornets in maneuverability. Not to mention, altitude, speed, range, fuel capacity and payload advantages. The Tomcats downfall was its maintenance which required nearly triple the manhours compared to the Hornet. But at least people had paying jobs with em in service.
