I think Cliff and Rob are both great players, however, they play different roles in Metallica. Cliff was going his own way, like he could play a bit differently here and there as James and Lars asked, but Cliff was Cliff anyway, he always had his own way. And Rob is like a harmonious part of the sound. Look at his parts in Death Magnetic and how they coexist with guitar parts, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Bassists from Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Rush, Motorhead, and Iron Maidden as well as lead guitarists from Deep Purple, Ulrich Roth, Jimi Hendrix, and Tony Iomi from Black Sabbath

Iron Maiden, Rush, & Motorhead among others were Cliff's influences. They all had a definite bassist. He was only 24 when he died. Just think what he could do today. No injustice to Jason or Robert, but I wish he were still here. God rest his eternal soul.

Dude You Cant Talk Smack About Anybody In Metallica Including Robert Trujillo They Say The Same About Kirk, And Lars "There The Best" No There Not There Music Is Great Together But There Not The Best Alone Thats Why There In A Band! mm even when i dont know too much about him yet (im from chile and they r coming the 29 of november) but he sure have a preetty good tecnic the and hi have his own "symbol" and yes i know is just a pose but i kind of like the walking-monkey bass.
