KubachiThere is no other village in the Caucasus as Kubachi. This aul is unique for its location and architecture. The stone cascades of saklyas (houses) full of ledges down the hill resemble a waterfall. At first sight the aul is like the gigantic saklya with the dozens of step floors. It's hard to find separate saklya: they all have become one, pilling up the mountain.Kubachi is known not only for its exotic location. The craftsmanship of the local metal-chasing and inlay-carving goldsmiths has been existing for ages. Kubachi masters form the shapeless pieces of silver and gold into the delicate articles of amazingly delicate work with the weaved intricate lines, patterns and mysterious colours.In the Middle Ages the articles of Kubachi craft: weapons, copper and silver objects have been exported not only to the neighboring districts but also to the Middle East countries.The old chasing masters tell old legends about Kubachi jewelers who had managed to eclipse the fame of the glorious Iran craftsmen. Once upon time the Iranians had heard of the famous goldsmiths living far away in the distant Daghestan mountains who had created the glory by their hands. The wisest men of Iran summoned the council and decided to send their representative to Daghestan masters with the silver thread which was thinner than the autumn web and lighter than the sun ray. The Iranian addressed the mountaineers with the words: "The Persian jewellers wonder if Kubachi people can carve the same thin thread. Over the night the Kubachi inhabitants drilled the Iranian silver thread through and in the morning handed it in to the envoy with a short note saying: "We have been making water pipes of it here." The Kubachi rooms are like miniature museums. The unique works of art- bronze cauldrons, weapons, various utensils are collected here.Since the old times Kubachi inhabitants have been honoured as the passionate antiquarians. They made trips to the Eastern countries to buy rare china and rare things made of it.The art products of the goldsmiths - jugs, plates, sets for tea and cognac, daggers, swords, various adornments.
