Swing Out Sister is a British sophisti-pop musical group best known worldwide for their 1987 song "Breakout", which was their only song to reach the US top 10. Various listeners have classified their sound as everything from smooth jazz to cool jazz to acid jazz. The group was formed by Andy Connell (keyboards) and Martin Jackson (drums), and were later joined by Corinne Drewery (vocals)In late 1986, the single "Breakout" was released. It reached the number three position on the UK charts, and number six in the United States.Consequently, when they released their debut album, "it's better to travel", on May 11, 1987, it reached number one on the UK album charts. The album registered with listeners for its mix of jazz and electropop, with a blend of real horns, synths (arranged subtly, to sound like strings), drums, and xylophones, scored by producer/arranger Richard Niles. The follow-up single to the effervescent "Breakout" was the brooding "Surrender", which featured a trumpet solo performed by John Thirkell. It rose to number seven on the UK charts in January 1987. The next single was the more serious and jazzy "Twilight World". This song was the subject of many remixes and was a dance club favourite worldwide. The final single "Fooled By a Smile" returned to the upbeat pop orientation characteristic of "Breakout".

Actually Timmy boy, it so happens that i can't stand punk. Further, for what its worth, i like a lot of 70s music espec Abba, the Eagles and the BeeGees-groups whose bandmembers knew how to compose a great tune. But of course nothing beats the glorious 80s.Hugs and kisses

The eighties isn't even inspiring enough to have an expression. Nuff said!

There is a well known expression. "The 70's is the decade that taste forgot". I rest my case.

I had to shorten my list due to text restraints. The list was twice as long and I still wasn't finished. I see where your interests lie and they don't lie on my side of the tracks. Every act that I've listed not only had a phenomenal impact on the decade, but also had a strong influence on all the acts you've listed from the eighties. Some major homework is in order, dude.

I was born in 74.Led Zep were good. But the rest of them on your list were rank. There were good bands in the 70's: The Who, Black Sabbath, ABBA, Television, etc.But consider the 80's: Metallica, Van Halen, Duran Duran, Erasure, The Police, The Smiths, Madness.

Are you out of your mind? Let's make a list:WAREarth, Wind and FireRufus featuring Chaka KhanThe CommodoresLed ZeppelinElton JohnGil Scott-HeronThe JB'sThe Doobie BrothersParliament-FunkadelicAnd that's just for starters. Do I really need to go on. How old are you anyway?

Dude. Who from the 70's was any good?
Timmyfunk1 (September 2, 2008 at 11:26 pm)
Such a statement could only be attributed to addiction to a new form of crack. The music of the 1980's clearly represents the mood of the era: greed, narcissism, and everything else in between. You probably didn't grow up in the seventies, which would explain such a ridiculous comment.
audiodead (September 2, 2008 at 11:17 pm)
The eighties shits all over the seventies. Apart from a few high points such as ABBA, the rest of the seventies was shite.
Timmyfunk1 (September 2, 2008 at 9:08 pm)
Clearly? Hardly. The seventies would eat the eighties for lunch. Wrongly trashed grunge? I don't think so. Outside of Pearl Jam, that was one wasteful genre of music.Let me guess, you like punk too, right? That genre's moment in the sun lasted what, 2 years? Cya, wouldn't want to be ya! Hey, that's from the nineties!
