speed rings or speed washers work with spacers to protect and prolong the life of your bearing. Because you can tighten them as much as you can with spacers and washers, it helps keep lateral forces off the bearing that can damage/warp them. It's always a good idea to get spacers and washers when you can so you can make your bearings last longer.

If you have bearing spacers you can tighten down your bearings real tight and still have them spin. It keeps the center ring of the bearings from being pushed in when they are tightened down. Other wise the balls in the bearings would be pushing against the shields and the bearing will not spin.
