You don't. You shoot whatever it is, or you employ some 'staring down' tatics, or you hide, or you back slowly away, or you die. Simple as that. And protection? Generally a rifle like.

The fact you can just walk around without a care in the world in the African bush seems like heaven to me. I do that here in the states, but we don't have the big game animals like you do. Whatdo you do for protection, if you dont mind me asking? If you encounter a hostile situation alone in the river bed? |
