I'm an oldhead and I remember Esther Phillips version of this song and I have always thought that it is about a junkie...pure and simple...."white powder dreams"..."you keep saying kick it, quit it, but did you ever try to turn your sick soul inside out so the world can watch you die"...it's about thhe pain and alienation of a junkie.
