Well, you are right that it is above all a love song, but its also about death. As death means different things to different people depending on their beliefs, it is also about religion and faith.

on and no matter what he will lover her, becasue she asked him to move on and he said no becasue he loves her so much!Sorry for butting in on the convo I was letting you know PAINTYOURTEETH that you have it right. the hole represent the her fadeing away aka cancer getting worse till its gone nothing left and he starts to realize soon she will be gone. You have that correct. I meet them in Montreal and I asked them what the song ment and yes its about his true love that passed away. She passed away by cancer. He mentions in the song "just our hands clasped so tight..." He gives alot of songs for her like "I will posses your heart..." resemboling his true love traveling THE MEANINGS HE WROTE ME lol 16th b-day gift :)

He mentions faith in the lyrics. So... it has something to do with faith. My take on it is that you don't realy know what's after death till it happens. He'll follow her into the unknown... the dark. And he's trying to ignore the the hole, or the inevitable. And as he ignores it more, the hole gets bigger till there's no escaping it.
