When amateurs get behind a keyboard, all politeness, friendship and the 'amateur spirit' generally goes down the pan. Pissing and moaning, threats and insults, no respect for the other guy's opinions. Packet radio was always the same. I think the computer age heralded the death of the hobby. Very sad.

'Rafmanne', you're wrong again. Not all who designed their radio systems were Hams. And the point of argument is NOT about foretelling disaster, but RESPONDING to it. Amateur Radio operators DID respond by setting up point to point, as well as repeater communications that greatly aided local and national authorities for various groups. You must have been asleep those few days. Lastly, I did not 'diss' FDNY. I was just mentioning that 38 years with FDNY had nothing to do with your argument.

"The same NYFD (and NYPD) that had massive communication failures with their radio gear and/or lack of frequency coordination on 9/11"The radio system was designed by Communications Engineers, who were all hams... All the frequency "coordination" in the world could not have foretold of the main antenna structure being removed "terrain-wise"What you have done is not only dissed FDNY but hams who you seem to believe are "heroic" as well? Heroes do things, not talk up how great they "did" it

Big effing deal. So your father spent 38 years in the NYFD. The same NYFD (and NYPD) that had massive communication failures with their radio gear and/or lack of frequency coordination on 9/11 (i'm not dissing their heroism). This was all over the news and common fact, and helped add to the necessity of Hams. You obviously have some kind of animosity against Hams, given your false negative posts. You probably think black is white and white is black. If I 'need meds', then you need a lobotomy!

Considering my late Father spent 38 years in NYFD, you are full of ARRL wonder-crap...Blah, blah, blah, on & on about how great hams are... I have been licensed in the "old school" for 26 years... I don't see it "terrain-wise"...I hope you delusions subside long enough to see reality... Maybe the meds will help...
sophiegromit (August 1, 2008 at 1:38 am)
'Rafmanne', once again, you show how deluded you are. It is FACT that Amateur Radio operators set up emergency communications near 'ground zero', and helped coordinate key communications after cell systems failed completely in lower Manhattan. Hams also have helped, and continue to do so, when hurricanes, tornados, floods, or other disasters occur where communication systems fail or are unavailable terrain-wise. Hams even helped with the search effort after the last shuttle blew up on re-entry.

"hundreds of Amateur Radio operators set up emergency units in and around 'ground zero'"Total & utter crap... Just like Katrina where CW on a pair of spoons saved lives in New Orleans...Hope your KoolAid is cold...
sophiegromit (July 31, 2008 at 10:59 pm)
'Rafmanne', you need to seriously get a clue and educate yourself. 'When all else fails' is still true today. There was massive cell phone failure, and departmental communication problems during and after 9/11, and hundreds of Amateur Radio operators set up emergency units in and around 'ground zero'. They handled critical emergency traffic between emergency responders, aid units, and other government units via 2 way radio using repeaters when ALL ELSE FAILED!
