This is the first video where I've seen what it's like with the daily struggle to live with diabetes. As a mom, I tell my type 1 daughter she can do anything. But there are times where it kills me to tell her, her blood sugar is too low or too high to swim, eat, or run. It just doesn't make sense.

what i wouldnt give to go one day without having to deal with this on an hourly basis. im 16 and ive had type 1 all my life. so if you have something negative to say about how people control diabetes, think twice about what its like putting sugar in your coffee with having to worry about it

I agree with you that HFCS is terrible and I try not to give it to my 4 year old diabetic but it is important to let these kids be kids as well. Their whole lives change when they are diagnosed. My daughter a sugary cereal for breakfast a couple of times a month, if that, but on those days she asks...if I count the carbs correctly and give her the appropriate amount of insulin then it doesn't mess with her BG too much. Trust me, we live with this disease every day.

Um, hello! sugar is pure unopposed carbs. And it's not about carbs really... As I said, type 1 is an autoimmune disease and inflammatory foods directly assist the inflammatory cascades that lead to further beta call destruction. He's be better off with pure glucose than HFCS or wheat/gluten products to raise his blood glucose levels. But these are ideas that the FDA, Kelloggs and Coca-Cola would rather you not know. glucose.

Don't be so quick to judge. It is a common misconception that diabetics can't have sugar. It is about carbs, not sugar and although it's not the best choice in food, it is fine as long as he gets insulin.

If my kid had DM1 (which is an autoimmune disease) he wouldn't be eating cereal, milk and gatorade. Gluten, casein and high fructose corn syrup?! all inflammatory foods with little nutritional value. If you fighting a "war" (which I think is a very poor analogy), I wouldn't be using those "weapons".

As a Type-2 adult-onset DM'er, it was explained to me that diet and exercise, along with oral medication, can control Type-2 to a certain extent. Kids like Calvin that come down with Type-1 MUST have insulin. There's plenty of info out there to be found, but please be aware that no diet-only is going to control Type-1. There are carbs and natural sugars is 'almost' every food, and that's what drives blood glucose levels up. A lot the comments have said a lot, though, so I won't go on with that!
