READ BACKGROUND CONTEXT TO FILM: In 1947 the 7th Marques of Londonderry left the Plas mansion and its ground to the District Council of Machynlleth for "the perpetual use and enjoyment of the inhabitants of this town and district". But since the 'Celtica' visitor centre closed in March, the building has been standing empty and largely unused. The Council invited organisations and groups to submit proposals for the future use of the building. One such proposal, put together by the 'Plas Steering Group' grew out of extensive surveys and consultations with the local community and enjoys widespread popular support. But it was subsequently leaked that the County Council felt that it would be within its rights to sell the building privately should this be the most financially attractive option. This film was made to give the Council an idea of the breadth of support and enthusiasm for the community proposal and the sense of loss that would be felt if the Plas building were to be sold privately. It is edited entirely of footage shot on the 25th of June, at an event designed to give the community the opportunity to explore the local proposal and offer feedback. Residents of the town and district were invited to speak to the camera in our "Big Other Diary Room" about their hopes for the future of the building. To date (Dec 2006) the Council still have not reached a decision about the future of the Plas Building. For more information about the Plas Steering Group's proposal see www.plasmachynlleth.org.uk

heh heh - never thought I'd stumble upon footage of FreeFall (the band) from that long ago! We seriously enjoyed that gig, awesome to see the whole community out there!

The Plas, Celtica....The park surrounding Celtica has truly become a sad sight! Yes, it - the Plas - should be used for the community. A year later - what has become of your plans now I wonder. Machynlleth is not really a vibrant place. I like what the children asked for: a cinema! There is not much to do for children I agree. Good food and wine, yes! There is also nothing in Machynlleth for the youth. WHY IS THERE NO MORE HELP FOR THE COMMUNITY OF MACHYNLLETH FROM THE GOVERNMENT???

This is a strange comment by JDJones. There has always been a lively community in Machynlleth, and a vibrant culture driven not by outsiders or the 'English' (as JDJones likes to label these groups of people!). It's true, and good, that English immigrants play an active role in community matters, but JDJones seems to insinuate that us local Welsh people do nothing for the community, and instead go around beating people up on a Saturday night!

since moving to bath i think i've met more welsh people than i did living in mach!! kidding aside, i think it great the town is getting together to decide on the future. it seems the 'outsiders' seem to be the driving force in town these days, since the CAT came, the town has had a new lease of life. i say good for them, the english are now the forward looking side and life of the town. good to see that mach isn't all fires and beatings up on a saturday night.have they fixed that clock yet?
