This movie has a strong element rooted in history. The battle the crusaders lost was called Hittin- Balian ibn Barzan was the commander of Jerusalem. If you are interested in the true story of the crusades, you should read the Islamic histories of the crusades- it is a much better read than kill the saracens. (PS i am orthodox)

well no not exactly again. Jihad was part of the original ethos of Islam. Muhammed was a warrior as much as a prophet. The holy war he started conquered the Arab peninsula by the time of his death and soon most of the Middle east fell to his successors. So the idea of "holy war" is much older in Islam than contact with the Crusades.

well actualy...no. When Jerusalem orginally fell in 638 AD to the Arabs everything was more or less ok. Only when the Turks pushed out the Arabs, started killing pilgrims, and threatened the Byz Empire did the plea for help come from the Emporer to the Pope and that sparked the Crusades. So it really was the Turks fault(who happened to be muslim)not all muslims but thats the way it is.

Aha...the city of jerusalem..the holy city of the Christians...took by the muslim..will the Christians just sit by doing nothing while their holy land get captured...no... but YES..Pope did the right thing...the land of the Saviour fall to the other hand...will he just sit and do nothing...of course no!

Kingdom of Heaven. But note that the story is just fictive. The historic backround is rather small. But is true that the europeans were savages in those times and the muslims learned the concept of a "holy war" from the bloodthirsty crusaders.

WRONG RasenganPwn. The pope started the war, urging the Christians to capture the holy city of Jerusalem - the Muslims didn't even know what was coming. And the Christians weren't even defending a country, they were invading it. The Muslims didn't take a step into Europe.
