One of the great acting performances of our time! I was involved in this recording (Ely Cathedral UK. London Symphony Orchestra). There was a problem with a TV camera during the last movement so we had (Bernstein included) to run it again and mime to our pre-recorded sound track. So what we are seeing here is the great maestro sweating and waving his arms to a recording! He should be nominated for a posthumous Oscar.

Just look at the string players, each and every one playing their hearts out, and you KNOW this is truly great Mahler.

The only three moments in music that have brought me to tears: THIS, the ending of MAHLER'S EIGHTH, and the ending to ODE TO JOY

hello jeffrey! this is austin! being the liberal hippie i am, i encourage you to ignore any religious or political thingys when listening to this music, and for the sake of music, mahler, and bernstein.

mahler uses the his talent to express praise in general, you don't need to understand a word of the text to understand why mahler writes this. atheists enjoy this music just as much as catholics. that my friend, is a fact that classical music can give. despite any beliefs and differences people have, we can all agree, music eliminates such borders.

God is the author of beauty, the giver of music. The beauty of the integrity of Holy Scripture, a collection of writings composed over 1500 years by forty-some authors, is a feat of literary art never surpassed in all of world history. The unbroken historical-redemptive narrative of God's covenant with man described from Genesis to Revelation speaks for itself and its own inspiration. Music is but one way for mankind to praise the Creator. Mahler here uses that gift magnificently.
