Higher than TM? Meaning what, I should order a spare gearbox along with a pack of BBs?Nothing short of 1090-alloy cold-machined carbon steel will do the job. I don't care how much it costs, I want a guarantee that the only way I can break that rifle is when I do so on purpose. How they managed to decrease power by a magnitude of 1000 AND increase failure rate by 500 o so at the same time is truly beyond me, especially considering airsoft rifles like systema cost like real ones.

Almost all their guns have a quick release spring mechanism so you can swap the spring in, depending on the gun, as fast as 1-2min when you get used to it. This also means working on the guns are easier as when you open the mechbox there is no tension to cause the mechbox to shoot across the room or explode like normal ones can because of the compressed spring inside.

STAR's L85 series are made of stamped steel, thats right, steel, not aluminum or potmetal but actual carbon steel. They have a fairly low out-of-the-box failure rate but it is higher than TM (obviously) and their guns last quite a while, there aren't any specific cheap internal parts like the CA piston problem.

Even though many STAR guns have plastic mechboxes they are far from weak. The plastic their made of is polycarbonate, same stuff Nalgene bottles and ballistic goggles are made of. It has a stronger tensile strength than the potmetal most mechboxes are cast from. STAR also designed the mechbox for their L85 series and it seems to be a modified ver.6 mechbox but its design is optimized to be as strong as possible specifically when made of polycarbonate.

That is true, some gearboxes have "metal components" which are made of a poor zinc alloy.Does anyone know what gearbox the l85a2 has? it would be great to be able to rebuild the box if the plastics died, with some metal.

wow i dont ever remember posting that comment...i knew it was a good gear box...but thats wierd maybe it was my brother on my account

actually its lexan, which is stronger than some of the metals used to make other gearboxes
