Just lighting glare. Only the external stores on the B-52 used impulse cartridges (small "explosive" device) to jettison them.

The smokey takeoff is the result of water being injected into the exhaust to give a temporary boost in thrust to the P/W J-57 turbojets.

This was made in what the early 90's? nearing its end HA! If nearing means 50 years away from it (when this was made).

There is an estimate that the BUFF will be in service until 2045!! Making it something like 90 years of service. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it does serve that long. Best aircraft ever built.
