well, take two modern crumple zones that are both superb. i would still take the longer one as it's preferable to have more car crushing for you.

the smart car is actualy very good in crashes its bulit around a cage its designed so that in a crash the energy is distrabuted around the cage so all the plastic etc flies off this the energy of the crash is not affected the key drivers compartment and every one lives check the 5th gear crash test of the smart car you can see it at crash at 70 mph and do better then most other cars

The test is rigged. The large Benz has a generous "crumple zone" that absorbs the impact. What if TWO SMARTs crash, and none has an crumple zone?Or what if it crashes agains a pole, or an older car/truck with no crumple zone? It's much better than a motorcycle in most situations, except in the few cases where you could go around and avoid the crash altogether.

the legs of the dummy were crushed that's why it isnt shown. In US tests the car only got 3 stars for frontal crash.

Yeah, just stay awake and sober and try not to hit the trees or lamp posts. Gotcha.

That is impressive.

Yes the impact a body can obsorb is only so much. That is why many people believe bigger is safer, BUT, with newer cars(i wont say older ones) they have better frames and are better engineered to absorb the impact before it gets to you. Old cars people would say "i got rear ended and it didnt even dent the back of my car!" and think thats a good thing. They fail to mention the whiplash and neck problems they had the rest of their life. Cars are now made to die FOR people not instead of people.

Get a honda fit, better fuel economy, twice the interior space, and you don't look like a girl driving it

not even a suburban will fare well against a truck, the fact is the smart car is pretty much indestructible. what you have to worry about is hitting ridged stationary objects, because the crumple zone is like 6 inches. it is supposed to activate the crumple zones on other cars, but trees don't really have those.
