He's in the beginning of his transformation into becoming a werewolf. Look out the window. The full moon is behind the clouds. Sirius and the other two just happened to be there at the time I guess and Remus went out of control and accidently attacked them. He didn't know any better.. Poor guy. Looks like James is about to put a sleeping spell on him so they can escape.
