The day after 9/11. Stranded Americans congregate outside Buckingham Palace in London, England. They can't go home because a no-fly order is in operation. The Queen orders the Guards to play the Star Spangled Banner as a sign of the UK's sympathy for the USA. Even Prince Andrew can be seen stood to attention. An astonishing departure from tradition, Brits are also moved to tears when this clip is televised.

Well I knew that royal power plays virtually no part in British politics. I understand why the British would be pro-monarchy. I was responding to someone who said "stop saying god save the queen". I thought that was kind of strange, because I thought that it was a British motto of a sort. It was probably a British anti-monarchist, now that I think about it.

I believe that over 70% of the population are still pro-monarchy. A monarch's main interest is her subjects well-being so political interests have no influence. Also, the royal power of veto limits the power of political parties although in practise the veto hasn't been used for centuries.

Truly an incredible gesture, 7 years later and it still brings tears to my eyes. You Brits are amazing.

Are there even any serious monarchists in the UK anymore? I thought Britain was mainly a republican nation already. God save the queen is mainly a symbolic statement, isn't it? It is still the UK's national anthem.

This is a very honorable thing to see. It's a shame that America has become so unpopular in parts of Europe.

very nice of the UK guard orchestra to play that for Americans. Well done.

I remember watching that on TV and it is still the most honorable and classiest acts of kindness I have ever seen. Also, they played it flawlessly. Thanks UK.

just like to say as an englishman that "everyone that i know was very saddened by the tragic events of 9/11 and that america is very popular amongst the majority of brits". i say this as we have a snake on site called "yoganate79" who enjoys nothing more then bad mouthing us brits and turning americans against us. iv'e lived in england all my life (25 years)so i am sure i am better educated for telling you how we feel towards your great country!god bless the uk &usa
