my band just played live music at buffa-louies in Bloomington, IN...which used to be know as The Gables, which I just found out is where Hoagy Carmichael kicked off his career!

At age 71 I share your feelings. Still I have heard the odd rap with good words and kind of a counterpoint part singing with good chords of a minor scale , and I enjoyed it.. Each Genre requires listening skills. My parents, German thought Louis Armstrong's hot five was "jungle music" played by an inferior race, well my dad was playing violin, classical style, he was born in 1878.

Great piece of swing-band history! JT while famous was somewhat obscured by the great TD. The musicians in the band were fabulous and, even though I hate labels, I would call this swing rather than jazz, considering what Basie and Ellington were doing at the same time. The film stereotyping of African Americans in this period is record, but this film is embarrassing beyond the pale. Still, a fun look at the past and some fab swing sounds abound.
