They are probably that skinny because of eating disorders. Anerexia and Bulimia are considered the dancer's disease.

Like Dutchess222 said, there's so much to learn and perfect that you have to start young. Also, to gain sufficient turnout/flexibility before your hip rotator muscles and flexibility are set. Plus, a dancer's career on stage is very short, ideally you should start your career in ballet around 18 while you're young and fit as you can probably only continue until your late 30s.

Well, ballet is very hard for your body, so you have to be very light that you can dance long time, because you're knees wont last of you're too heavy.

My ballet instructor's from the Bolshoi Ballet and she always talks about how there's no pressure now, how she was treated back at the Ballet, etc. It's still the same in Russia now, maybe not for all the dancers, but for most of them.

i know some russian ballet dancers (THE Moscow Ballet, might i add) and they're not that thin. they're nice, though. and they're healthily thin like me. |
