There is an awful lot of misunderstanding about this song, it has nothing to do with losing your girl. Bob is recalling a deeply personal experience from his youth when he and his friends came close to starvation. Vincent Ford ran a soup kitchen in Trenchtown and literally saved their lives. It is said that on Fords death bed Bob said to his wife "No woman nuh cry" Bob knew he was going to a better place. "The Government Yard" refers to a slum in Trenchtown and "nuh" in Jamaica means don't.
