If you look at the era that this and other carmen miranda things were popular, you'll notice there was a BIG event happening that occupied a lot of people's minds. They wanted to see something this happy and surreal in order to get away from a frightening time.

To a certain extant, that is true. United Fruit was our "good neighbor policy" with Latin America, which prevented the formation of unions and all that nasty vicious stuff that America is famous for. Nevertheless, Carmen Miranda was a marvelous performer and truly a phenomenon, given that she still fascinates and mesmerizes us.
