"i wonder why they used "brother/sister" instead of comrade. I feel like comrade was better. not sure why they swiched" This isn't just an attack on communist system orwell was an avid socialist after all though alot of this is a parody of the soviet system.

if anything can save us from socialist totalitarinism, it is faith in God; for as long as people believe in something higher than man, government cannot be supreme in people's lives.

Believe it or not, alot of analyses of the book I have read have really tried to warp the meaning from Socialist/Totalitarian critique to a critique of a Christian governemnt. I am pretty sure the switch from "Comrade" was to avoid insulting Communism, which is once again a popular movement, and to shift the blame to the Christian "Brother/Sister" name. Tearing into Christianity is very trendy, but not Orwell's goal for 1984. His mention of the Catholic Church by Obrien was to mock it's failure

I agree with NewfieFlickr666 as to why they changed it, but I still prefer comrade as well. Comrade is gender-neutral, while brother/sister brings attention to gender differences. As the government is trying to get rid of sex altogether, comrade just makes more sense.

Yes. The book is highly relevant, especially in these times.Nowadays we use words like hatespeech, we are starting to have perpetual wars. |
