The virtuosity probably did decrease, you're probably right on that count. I retract that one.I still don't think the fact that Collins helped Genesis become more widely appealing means he "killed" the band. I think a lot of the music that was massively popular from that time period was in fact extremely good. I say the good thing about him bringing a new, more radio-friendly approach to the tracks is that it helped expose pop music sheep idiots to at least a diluted form of progressive.

I think "by killing" he meant gradually converting the best prog rock band into an 80's pop hit makers. And what is so great about bringing a new aproach to a band when is not needed nor is for better? BTW the level of virtuosity decreased in a manner never seen before in any other band. The only thing that I agree w/you is your comment on his voice (even though I prefer P. Gabriel's)and drumming. I think Adrian Belew said that the nature of Prog in its original form wasn't meant to be popular. |
