Some trombonists chew things to keep the spit up during breaks. It was probably gum, but keep in ming this was a while back, so it might have even been tobacco.

Mancini is da' man! The soloists were tops as well. Mancini may be gone, but his music will remain immortal. May I recommend an album/CD called "This is Mancini." It was a double album(2 records; remember those? I've got a ton of vinyl I absolutely refuse to get rid of), and it is one of the best compilations of Mancini hits that I know. The copyright is 1971 and it is flawless. I bought it at a garage sale about 20 years ago and have played it countless times since.
