I dont know.... I've heard people do that same beat (double bass triplet with hi hat) without triggers. I think Billy Cobham can do it, and I don't think he uses midi. He uses it in solos, and I think he does a similar move as the intro to his song "spectrum"

His foot pattern for playing triplets is ridiculous. Doing LRR with the feet at high speeds like that is crazy.
