IT'S ATTEMPTING TO SHORE UP THE FIRE LINE...THAT GROUND CREWS NUMBERING IN THE HUNDREDS FROM AROUND THE WEST...HAVE CUT INTO THE WILDERNESS. OFFICIALS SAY BRUSH HERE HASN'T BURNED IN FIVE DECADES...AND IT MAKES FOR RIPE FUEL.CREWS ALSO WILL WORK OVERNIGHT...SETTING CONTAINED BACK FIRES...TO BURN OFF DRY KINDLING... THE GAP FIRE, AS THIS ONE OF HUNDREDS OF FIRES AROUND THE STATE IS CALLED...IS MORE THAN A THIRD CONTAINED. 2000 HOMEOWNERS WERE ABLE TO RETURN TODAY...BUT FIRE FIGHTERS WORRY WARM WINDY WEATHER COULD WHIP UP THIS BLAZE ONCE AGAIN.
