Christopher Hitchens debates the Reverend Al Sharpton on the question of whether morality can exist in the absence of God.-----A Debate: God Is Not Great with Al Sharpton and Christopher Hitchens.Taking on possibly the greatest issue of our time - the malignant force of religion in the world - Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion through a close and learned reading of the major religious texts, citing numerous historical instances in which sexual repression and outrageous acts of violence have been committed in the name of God. He argues for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble telescope's awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry of the double helix. -- NYPLChristopher Hitchens is an author, journalist and literary critic. Now living in Washington, D.C., he has been a columnist at Vanity Fair, The Nation and Slate; additionally, he is an occasional contributor to many other publications.Al Sharpton Jr. is a Pentecostal minister, a political activist, civil rights activist and film actor. In recent years, Sharpton has also become a perennial candidate in his quest for the Democratic Party's nomination for President of the United States. Author of "Go and Tell Pharaoh: The Autobiography of the Reverend Al Sharpton."

Nothing is more sacred than the facts. No points should be won therefore for deluding ourselves. The litmus testfor reasonableness should be obvious: anyone who wants to knowhow the world is, whether in physical or spiritual terms, will be opento new evidence. We should take comfort in the fact that people tendto conform themselves to this principle whenever they are obligedto. This will remain a problem for religion. The very hands that propup our faith will be the ones to shake it.

@nef2442- Methinks thou dost protest too much."The Bible is a book that has been read more and examined less than any book that ever existed"-Thomas PaineBe careful in blind faith, because in the end that's exactly what it is.

The only thing imperfect is man himself. It's like that NRA bumper sticker that reads, "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." Christ taught to turn your other cheek if some one strikes you. He taught us to pray for our enemies. Does this sound a doctrine that could possibly be linked to murder and rebellion. Its man's own wicked heart that drives him to commit such heinous acts. The Bible has been a beacon of truth and goodness for man pulling them out from their darkness and depravity

If you can honestly read the New Testament and still be able to say that the atrocities committed by Catholics are Christian crimes than you are blind. Christ taught meekness love and peace. To turn your other cheek in the face of aggression. To pray for your enemies. etc etc. He had a message of pure love. The atrocities committed by man's greed during the dark ages, were cloaked under a banner of piety. But by no means were they following scripture, they were following their own wickedness

You'll find slavery, you'll find oppression against women, and you'll find genocide in the Bible. You are correct on that but its DESCRIPTIVE history on how the Jews escaped from bondage in mass exodus came into a foreign land and conquered it. No where in the Bible are these prescribed. It's like reading a book about a history book on G. Washington you'll read that he killed a lot of Brits and maybe even enjoyed it. But you can't say that Washington prescribed the murder of Brits to progeny

Some had their own people killed for speaking against them, like the German Peasants' Rebellion and St. Bartholomew Day Massacre. Christianity has had it's terrible times too, we just don't see them this day in age.. yet. It is not the perfect religion.
