This is a revision to previously posted videos. I was fortunate enough to go to the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake IA and speak firsthand with many who were there including Tommy Allsup who flipped the coin with Ritchie Valens. This version corrects some factual errors and includes new footage from the SURF

Why doesn't Don McLean just tell us the meaning of the lyrics ?

There was a point and time when John Lennon developed an interest in communism and various socialist governments, so "reading a book on Marx" is probably a reference to that.

Why is Dylan kept being referred to as "The Jester"?

I was 16 when this song came out in 1971, and thought at the time that it was about President Kennedy's assassination, since I was too young to have much nostalgia about the late 1950's.

I always imagine that ms american pie was like the saying 'american as apple pie' I think it goes. Anyway, I think he means something that all Americans enjoy.

no its not, really.lenin wasnt alive at this point, he hadnt been for a long time.Lennon must have read a book on marx, he was a Liverpudlian during a time when socialism here in Liverpool was big.he grew up in a working class background,he was openly political.

'The sergeants' refers to the beatles, not the army
