My friend from Laos calls it tam mok hoong. All I know is I like the stuff better without the fish sauce.

What's the big deal? When Thai adopt curry from India, they call it Thai curry. I see no Idians whining about it. If Som Tum came from Loa, then Thai can call this dish Som Tum Thai. Moreover, Thai and Lao people share the same root so what is the F*ing deal? Gee, why you guys have to be so insecure.

som tam is thai food? my foot!the lady speak lao and the tone sound esan she is esan esan people are originally lao but about 70 year ago thai fought for the land n now esan people are now thai when other ethnic see esan eat som tam they will say it is thai food jus cuz esan eat it and esan is now thai people thai people steal credit from lao people alot also in tv show in america they make sticky rice and says it is thai food my ass!thai/esan call it som tam lao call tam som or tam mok hoong

I understand that most Thai Issan people are actually ethnic Lao people, but it's still weird for me to see Lao foods like papaya salad, larb salad and sticky rice referred to as Thai or Issan food. That's actually a traditional Lao meal. However, it's nice to know that Thai people also enjoy eating Lao foods.
