It is a bit like saying that Europe is a mass of principalities and there should be an official language.OK, the example is extream but you know what I mean. And IF the UK WERE ever to give independance to each of the nations within it, then the official language should be what THAT country decides. Are we really discussing this at this time of night?? lol

I do undeerstand what you are saying ultra... What I mean is if someone is going to move to a certain area... say the area of Wales where they speak Welsh and not English, then that person should be made to learn Welsh. If they are moving to a place where they Speak English the they should be able to speak English. My point is more that the person(s) moving to the UK should learn the language of where they will live.

If this principle is broken and you have more than one official dialect, that means that any important official information (including Prime Minister's speeches, a Queen's address, police announcements, etc) will have to be announced simultaneously in two, three, four or five languages, because they all enjoy the same equal protection under the law as official. This will make society (eventually) unworkable.

I'm not against Wales becoming independent, if that's the feeling generally. But you still can't have different official languages within one country, even in provincialities, because the basis of having a functional country at all is that all its citizens are able to communicate in one single common tongue with one another, and it is this which unites them.

With respect, Wales does not have a Parliament. As you say, it has the powers of a "Regional" Parliament. An assembily is much more restricted. This is totally different from a parliament. And yes it IS a provinciality, but I am sure that if there were a vote taken, it would rather be its own country. If Wales and England had Parliaments like Scotland then that would be different as that has more power. But at least they have one I spose). And why can't you have more than 1 official language?

ezzcrezz: Wales *does* have its own parliament. It's called the Welsh Assembly, and it's based in Cardiff. It has all the powers of a regional parliament. But Wales is not a separate country, it is a provinciality and you can't have two or three or four official languages.

I may not like it but that is the way it is?What are you on about? For a star, Cornwall is "England" so English is the Language. As for Wales... there are areas of Wales where people "Can't" Speak English and "Welsh" is the official language. If England gets it's own parliament (Which we are long oveerdue one) then perhaps Wales can too and they can have their official language all over their country. Why should we English have the say on what language people should speak in Wales?
ultramagellan (June 24, 2008 at 12:41 am)
ezzcrezz: and people who move to Cornwall should learn to speak Cornish, I presume?
ultramagellan (June 24, 2008 at 12:39 am)
English is not an "international language". If you live in the United Kingdom, the single official language is English. The state you live under conducts its business in English. You may not like that but that's the way it is.

Since I believe in devolution and that Wales should also have it's own Parliament (As should all our nations in the UK), I also looki at Walse as a country in it's own right so the people that move their should learn Welsh and it would be nice to see a vote amongst the "Welsh" to ask if they would like their language back and that everyone that lives in Wales should speak Welsh. |
