i prefer brannaugh's version, mainly because there is more emotion, and it is more historically acurate, but this was good for the period i suppose

Thanks for the reply Searcherboy. I do understand the time frame, and I do understand the period durring which the Olivier version of the film was made. Olivier was a great actor, but in this film I am completely aware that he is acting. The Branagh version of the speech seems to come from his heart. The background music in Branagh's version also makes a world of difference. When I hear Branagh's version of this speech, I have a sudden desire to invade France.

This film was made 45 years before Branagh's version. Different style of acting, different directorial concept, made for a different purpose. Olivier's film was consciously "stagy". It's basically a filmed stage performance, a nostalgic piece of pro-war propaganda. Remember, it was shot during WW2, while the Brits were still fighting the Germans. Branagh's film, by contrast, is realistic and anti-war.

This speech blows massive chunks of dead fish heads. Larry Olivier may have been a great actor, but I don't see it here. Kenneth Brannaugh's performance was ten times better. Sometimes I think Olivier got more recognition than he deserved because he was willing to do Shakespearian rolls. Kenneth Brabnnagh was also able to do something Olivier could never do,make Shakespeare interesting to the movie going public.

I agree. This version is far superior to all others.
M4rio21 (September 15, 2008 at 2:35 am)
I definately disagree, Kenneth seems to have way more emotion when he says this great speech.

Great clip. far, FAR better than the Brannagh - without question~!

Olvier was a great actor and when this was made times were different but having seen the Kenneth Brannagh version first -which is so stirring and wonderful -I too find this a little lifeless -interesting to see it though.

Dull and lifeless, like he's reciting a speech and nothing like he's inspiring his army. Disappointing from someone who did such an amazing Richard III and others.I've yet to see an even remotely sufficient version of this speech that wasn't done in a live performance.
