I still think the first was the best - & John Foxx the missing link between Kraftwerk & Alain Resnais. The later Ultravox never waxed as poetic/cinematic.

Think of Ultravox! as two different bands and you'll feel better. Both were great, for different reasons. The Foxx-era stuff was great, but so were Vienna, Rage in Eden, and Lament. All remain enjoyable after 20... EEEP! I mean 30 years. I can fault the Foxx Ultravox for being just a little too derivative of Bowie and Roxy Music, but if you're going to rip someone off, I hope it's Bowie and Roxy. The pre-Ultravox single (Tiger Lily) is actually embarrassing. It's way too campy/show-tunesy.

I'm glad you brought this up... I was just thinking today how Midge Ure totally turned Ultravox into a band that idolized the mediocre..a a schlocky, genericized "Schengen" Europe that never really existed.

My favourite Ultravox was Midge, and all my school friends thought they were the business too. Who is right and who is wrong? At the end of the day you like what you like. Look at Marillion when Fish left. All the Marillion purists thought Hogarth couldn't replace Fish and the band wouldn't last 5 minutes. Fifteen or so years later, and the band that wouldn't last is better than ever. Ultravox aside, go and see Midge live when he comes around. You will be very pleasantly surprised.

The first 3 albums are a must, still I keep Vienna (even with Midge Ure...), this is a very good version of this great song.
