I am not relating to you what I have told kids while canvassing my assigned territory. As I've said before, I'm relating to you what I've been told by parents, teachers, students, grads, counselors and general members of the community. Is it also lost on you that we've confined the discussion to Georgia? Many states do not have the same opportunity for college.

The $13k figure that I gave is from a public university in Milledgeville. HOPE only covers the tuition, which is a little under $5k annually. That isn't even half of the cost.It is a fantastic opportunity, but it falls short. Over the course of an undergrad degree it is a total of $32k short.Thousands also fall behind and never complete their degree for various reasons. I'm not saying people shouldn't work. I'm saying that if they do, they deserve assistance.

So go to a public universioty. A free ride to UGA is a fantastic opportunity, which changes your future. It IS a panacea. Dorms & meal plans while getting a diploma are FAR cheaper than rent & food on your own. HOPE pays for everything else. It is VERY managable to work your way thru college when everything else is paid for...everyone in my family did it. Thousands do it EVERY DAY.Complaining about how untennable this is shows a lack of vision and gumption. GET UP AND GET BUSY.

You are babbling now. What is the point?I've not amended anything. You said there is a lack of opportunity for the young. I say that is absolutley wrong. I've been very consistent on that. I say you do them a disservice "canvassing" and telling them that. I say broaden your perspectiveEven though we didnt discuss the other issues you bring up, I imagine we also disagree about goverment handouts, interference and mispricing of healthcare, and education. I'm against them. Whatever.

That is fantastic advise. The problem is that if people did not stand up and make demands, we'd have no child labor laws, a six or seven day work week, and wages similar to those in Singapore. If we're talking about crack heads advocating a free ride, we're in agreement that that is unacceptable. But if we're talking about things like health care, education, protectionist policies for American industries, it looks like we're in disagreement.

At least you've amended your statement and conceded that what I really said is that there is a lack of opportunity rather than none at all.I made fun of your advise because you stated that hard work is all it takes to succeed. That is the point I take issue with. You are right in that hard work is a necessary factor to success. You're wrong in that it is all that is required.
jwhat01 (August 17, 2008 at 4:41 pm)
Yes you finally got it EXACTLY right. I AM saying I am fine with giving help as long as they dont demand it. Not a mere distinction without a difference.Charity is at the choice of the GIVER, not the demand of the taker. The BEST message to young people is to pay attention to their responsibilities & opportunities (school) and GET BUSY. If they do that, help ABOUNDS in the US. Unlimited. You WILL be noticed, and you WILL be successful. That lesson has stood the test of time.
jwhat01 (August 17, 2008 at 4:31 pm)
I am QUOTING YOU when you talked about the LACK of opportunity and limited options for Georgians. I am fighting against YOUR MESSAGE, not a straw man. You said it. The guy in the video is wrong.Do you REALLY want to be on that side of the argument? One of despair. You made fun of my advice of hard work, postitive attitude, & shedding entitlement attitudes like its Tony Robbins. But check your history. THOSE make success.U know very well what I am saying, and you KNOW I am right.
jwhat01 (August 17, 2008 at 4:18 pm)
You ABSOLUTELY said the poor Georgian kids have only 2 options...military or HOPE scholarship (like that was a bad thing.) You whined that the US is not "living up to its principles."I am simply telling you that is wrong. The enemy of poor people are those who spout that crap and foment a culture of "cant" & entitlement. Those who tell them their country is evil and it owes them more.I dont know what you canvass young people for, but it sounds like you deliver an awful message.
ls1z28chris (August 17, 2008 at 4:03 pm)
This is becoming amusing. You're fine with giving them help, so long as they don't demand it.I have not once said that there is "no opportunity" and "nothing but dire options." What I've said is that that is true for some, not true for others, and that we should help those for whom it is.Please stop applying to me the arguments of other people and then regurgitating Neal Boortz talking points.
