He loved classical music, but didn't care for the snooty stuff that often goes along with it. He was regarded as a rebel by many of his contemporaries because he played jazz. Many of his fans were drawn to him not only for his virtuosity, but also because of his contempt for classical institutions like the Vienna Academy. In many ways, he was a musician for the common man, and people loved him.

That made my day. It's really refreshing to see someone actually truly enjoy performing classical music in public, especially a piece as beautiful as this. I only wish I was skilled enough to do the same.

This is my favorite movement of Beethoven and Gulda captured it for the spirit it should have; he's given this a spirit of its own.
omybeethoven (July 27, 2008 at 5:46 pm)
This is not my favorite movement, but I love the whole Piano Concerto #5. Thanks for the post. I feel so connected with Ludwig.Seriously.

well, we can't say that we know what beethoven would have done, but it's ok not to like a particular interpretation. for example the rachmaninoff third played by argerich for me is pure shit. on the other hand, life and music would be boring with every artist playing the same way and we could also say that beethoven would hang himself seeing an army of clones playing his music. the good thing is that you always have where to chose from |
