derekrk - Jim was not a white man, he was one of the first half & half artists to attempt to break through. It was incredibly hard for him as the world wasn't as accepting of interracial relationships and children back then....I am just going off what my dad told me, I was born in 1977 and was only able to enjoy Jim on his record collection when I was growing up.

It doesn't matter how much it sounds like one because IT IS NOT ONE and how do you know if he would have sung the original song?!?WHERE YOU AND CROCE BEST BUDS!?!DID YOU KNOW HIS PERSONALITY!?!NO YOU DIDN'T SO YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO SAY WHAT HE WOULD HAVE SUNG AND WHAT HE WOULDN'T HAVE SUNG SO JUST SHUT YOUR MOUTH>:[

So derekrck, by your logic; anyone born after June 19, 1865 shouldn't sing this song because they weren't slaves.Besides, those lyrics are about sorrow and troubled times, the land ain't free for anyone. You don't like this kind of music? Then stop being such a racist and go away. And those are not the lyrics that Jim is singing anyway, so don't get your panties in a twist.

Thank you Jim for all that you did, including this song.
derekrck (May 27, 2008 at 11:12 pm)
ok here is the first original verse..Dere's an ol' man called the Mississippi, Dat's de ol' man that I'd like to be, What does he care if the world's got troubles? What does he care if de land ain't free? it is a song, about slaves. no question about it. it was not sung by slaves, but it is a slave song.the original 1920's version had the n-word in it. i dont think croce would be singing the original version let alone this one.
Yinyangman24 (May 25, 2008 at 8:53 pm)
It isn't a slave song if it wasn't made in the slave era, you **** idiot
derekrck (May 25, 2008 at 2:02 am)
