Weakened version of the opera. For a long time unobtainable, since the fall of the DDR again in the circuit. Lotte Lenya plays Jenny instead of the part of Polly on the stage so she sings only one song in this film. Carola Neher is Polly in the film and Valeska Gert is Mrs Peachum

Perhaps my favourite in all of You Tube. I have little Germanspiel but understand Weill and Brecht.Sublime stuff and allegorical for any society and modern time you wish to choose. As a Scotsman I say must learn Germanspiel.

Na! Genau!

hmmm... this is interesting. I always thought it was just "stylish" in those days to sing nasally and to roll the R's. Or to strongly insist on the final "e"'s in French songs. Btw: for those who understand French, an excellent parody of these old fashioned songs by comedians is available on YouTube. Search for "inconnus"+"chansons retro". The spoof of Berthe Sylva / Damia is particularly funny.

As far as I know, the sound and recording systems were so weak and inefficient in those days, that the singers used special technics to compensate, like nasaly voice with rolled R...
