But you also don't count the key you start on. C-D would correlate to 1-2 of your example, but that doesnt mean its two whole steps. I made a comment and apparently it was removed but it went something like this:C -> D -> E -> F# -> G# -> A# -> C -> D -> E -> F# -> G# -> A# -> CThe arrows are the whole steps, there's always one more note than the number of steps.

A whole scale is 7 notesC-D-E-F#-G#-A#-Cso without counting the second C twice, 2 octave would be 13 whole steps.C-D-E-F#-G#-A#-C-D-E-F#-G#-A#-C1-2-3-4 -5 -6- 7-8-9-10-11-12-13

there are 4 versions of mazeppa..1 from 12 etudes1 from 12 grande etude1 from 12 transcendental etude (this one)1 between grande and transcendental (medium difficulty)..

This allowed the composer to cover a much wider span of notes than the average pianist, perhaps even up to 12 whole steps"12 WHOLE steps = two octaves
