"How could these crazy ideas get followers in our time?"It all goes back to the second and third great awakenings. American Fundamentalist movements that took place right after the Revolution and during the Civil War. A fourth awakening happened around the 1960s creating many new Fundamentalist sects which utilized television to "evangelize." They use the many tactics outlined by AronRa to mis-inform and gain new followers. A good documentary to watch would be "Jesus Camp."
