This week we're building the hardware for the RepStrap! Working together with a team to build this robot was my favorite part of this whole process. The folks at Metalab, GRL Vienna, and Monochrome came together to make this project happen. At one time there were about 12 people all working on the project at 3 in the morning and the focus and excitement in the air was tangible. This project was on the same level as the drawbot and the near-space balloon. In all three of these projects, I've made great new friends out of sheer necessary and desperate collaboration!

you are obviously an idiot. do you have any idea what rapid prototyping is? its a vat of liquid polymer, a last traces out a 2d design one layer at a time, each pass of the laser hardens the material and keeps doing so until a 3d solid object is created. there is NO tooling cost. tooling is only needed for stamping/extrusions etc. this is mass production NOT proto'ing. this machine is a dirtball RP machine at its worst.

Obviously you know nothing... having parts custom made cost hundreds of dollars in Tooling and other costs... also i don't see how it would not save time... what would you rather do draw up a part and print it out in a few min... or draw something up send it to a manufacture pay hundreds for tooling and possible get the part weeks later... go troll somewhere else

wow you can spend hundreds and have a machine that does nothing... wow. for the cost effectiveness of this you can just draw your parts in SW and have them proto'd for you... saving time and money. this is crap.

umm no your dumb real CNC = thousands you can make this for like 200 bucks less if you have alot of the stuff just laying around

rapid prototyping machines can do all this, they exist already and blow this turd heap out the water. why bother? it would be easier to modify a hobby cnc laser machine into a rapid prototype machine than to build this junk pile.

IT IS BASICALLY A CNC

Yeh it should, it could just about print out almost anything, but it's in the primative stages.

In theory it should be able to print out even more complex things than just plastic... Freaky...
