RepStrap Z Stage made from Lego Bricks. After a number of failures with vertical rack & pinion, I switched them to horizontal and devised a pulley system to transfer the force to the vertical axis.

It's not a waste -- you can see it rising and falling. It gives a nice view of how quickly and smoothly it works.
