If you have a complex photo and you don't need to wrap text around a shape then I would use Photoshop. Depending on the photo you might be able to use the background eraser tool. If that doesn't get the desired result I would use a layer mask and do it manually. This way at least you can fix a spot at any time if you make a mistake.

well lets say you dont have a picture with a white background, coz im trying to do 1 for my bro but i just cant get the cut out just right, iv cut him out but i still have bits of the background in it, and when using the lasoo tool to try and get it just right it makes the bit im trying to cut out even bigger, any help?????

The vid is 10 min because it's a tutorial going slowly through all steps. If he skipped explaining and all that and just did it it wouldn't take more than 5-10 sec. (+ he had to put the picture in, which doesn't count towards what he referred to as "removing the background". :] )
