That's because there's 3 quartets that you hear, but only one is performing live :) It's by Steve Reich and called Triple Quartet - look it up on Wikipedia.

Yes, I saw them at a festival a few years ago I was extremely disappointed by their lacklustre performance. A few nights later they did another concert which a friend attended: he said they were superb. As both of us had played in an orchestra together, I took his word for it. So it seems their live gigs can be hit or miss. Certainly their CDs are uniformally brilliant.

I saw them in DC early this month. I was so disappointed. They were bloody awful. Maybe it was an off day for a group that revived the string quartet repertoire almost single handedly. Anyhow, triple quartet is an amazing piece drawn from Bartok's slightly even more amazing 4th quartet. Thanks for posting it.
